In 1976, Randy left Allentown, Pennsylvania, hopped on his 1972 Yamaha 360 Enduro motorcycle and drove to California to begin a new adventure in life. Beguiled by the freedom and opportunity of a newfound journey. Randy began working for the largest landscape company in the United States and now a competitor. While working there, he started doing side jobs; all residential landscape maintenance. Eventually, he went to work for the Port of San Diego as a gardener, then worked for the City of San Diego in Balboa Park and finally worked at Mission Bay Park.

In 1980, after working 4 years in the Landscape Industry, something sparked inside Randy. He began reading book after book, mostly inspirational readings, and others on business and entrepreneurship - Randy made a decision to pursue his ultimate dream – creating his own business.

New Way started in the year 1980. It started with one truck, Randy at the wheel, working the residential hills of San Diego. He had a passion for gardening and learned the basics on his own. After a few years, Randy hired a couple other guys, and together, they began servicing more and more residences. Their client list included some well-known celebrities and athletes like Steve Garvey, Capt. Mike the Weatherman and many more. At one point, his residential portfolio consisted of over 250 residential homes.

His company's portfolio expanded when he began providing maintenance to HOA, Commercial and Government properties. Randy's reputation of running a quality landscape maintenance company was beginning to grow; he knew he had to venture into the sales side of the business. Randy starting by joining trade organizations within the landscape industry. He served on the Board of Directors for the San Diego Chapter of California Landscape Contractors Association (CLCA) for a number of years. While serving on the CLCA Board, he also chaired the Education Committee, San Diego CAI Board of Directors for 3 years and past Co-Chairman of the Golf and Tennis Charity Classics for 2 years. He has also been a member of BOMA's Program & Events Committee, chaired that committee for many years and served on the BOMA Board.

Some of Randy's other involvements and accomplishments are listed below:

    • Advisory Board: Southwestern College 1994 to present

    *~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

I came to work at New Way Landscape and Tree Services, after my first year of college in 1997. Growing up, I had wanted to do many things – lawyer and psychologist being at the top. After 12 “solid” years of year-round, traveling the United States, competitive fast-pitch softball in addition to school, I was exhausted. I turned down two softball scholarships and asked my father, Randy Newhard, if I could join the “family business” at age 18.

I started at the very bottom, being the company receptionist who answered the phone “Good Morning New Way!” My father, Randy started me at minimum wage. If I were going to do this, I was going to do it the way he had—from the bottom! After a couple of years handling the front desk, I ventured into the Accounting department where I handled the typical A/R and A/P responsibilities. The more I learned about the company’s inner-workings, the more I progressed. Randy began to let me run with some ideas, and I began creating and developing databases to manage the extra maintenance work invoices, equipment inventory, customer sales and service requests. Reporting and database management turned out to be something I enjoyed and was innovative in developing ways to manage data and information as well as figuring out the best ways to store and report on New Way’s financial information.  Since I had been successful at this, I was promoted out of Accounting, and into my own new department which was the Service Department. It was then that I created the Service Request System (SRS) to enter, store, and update work orders via the web. Tracking service requests for internal control and accountability was critical to staying on top of client needs. We were able to track our account managers work orders and hold them accountable for what needed to be done.  I programmed and developed the system from the backend so customization was available for any client particulars.  Something no other Landscape Company provides.

After a few years perfecting the S.R.S. Database and the processes, I was promoted into Marketing where I worked for about 4 years developing all the advertising, marketing pieces, editorials, newsletters, PowerPoint presentations, brochures, tri-folds, articles, etc. I also attended all the sales functions, from trade shows to golf tournaments, to holiday’s events and fundraisers.  This was my favorite part of working at New Way. I loved being able to fulfill the creativity I had inside, and this was the perfect opportunity to do it.

Then one day my Dad came to me and said he was looking for a “partner”. Someone to share the business with. But especially, someone with whom he could trust his life's work with. Someone who’d have the same desire to keep this company alive, profitable, and reputable. Randy Newhard isn't someone I could ever replace, but when it came to running the business the way he would, he knew I would carry out that task with passion! That was back in 2006. Since then, I have been the Corporate Director, managing the businesses corporate needs, and infrastructure. In 2007, my Father asked me to become President. Since then I have been acting President, and my job as New Way's President is to primarily ensure that all lines of business within New Way, such as the financial, administrative, and the overall operation of the company are running efficiently.

New Way is unique in our approach in that we tailor our efforts towards specifics of not only the property itself but the manager we are working with. Our mission and goals are set by Ownership, then encouraged, implemented and embraced through middle Management. We are home grown and ran, so we don't have national direction infringing upon the needs of the Customer. I encourage "open door" policy which allows everyone to participate in the direction of New Way. We share next to everything with our team. We feel multiple heads are better than one – the healthier the team, the happier the team, the better we perform as a team.  My main goal is to ensure that we at New Way always understand the needs and interests of our customers so that we can deliver the best landscape solutions that provide the best quality and value.

It's been almost 18 years since I started at New Way, and I am just as passionate about this company today as I was nearly two decades ago...and working side by side with my Father is a gift many daughters don’t have the opportunity to experience, and I am thankful every day I am here and for the honor and the respect my father has shown me. New Way is home to me, and always will be.

  • Dan began his career in landscape construction 26 years ago in 1987 as a way to put himself through school.  He started off working in the field digging trench and installing plants. Over the years he has worked his way up the ladder starting as a Foreman, then worked his way up to a Superintendent, Project Manager and eventually Division Manager. Dan has done everything from small backyards, city projects, commercial buildings, models homes, HOAs, hotels, and large parks. One of the crowing achievements in his professional career was the installation of the Grand Del Mar Hotel here in San Diego. This was a very complex construction job with a very tight and definitive schedule. The project had over 85 crew members on site working from 6 am to 10 pm, six days a week for the final month in order to complete this project. The results speak for themselves.

“There is nothing more satisfying for me than to see a project that is nothing but dirt turn into a beautiful show piece that, when you look at it, can say I did that. I learned early in my career that taking care of the client is of paramount importance. I was told once that you should never bring your client superintendent problems, only solutions.” With his unique background, he brings unique problem solving abilities to our clients during the construction projects and offer them solutions that assist them in meeting their goals and deadlines.

In Dan’s spare time he enjoys going on outings with his wife such as the desert and trying new restaurants.  And sometimes they enjoy spending time at home, working in their yard.

"When I got out of the army in 1977 I drove a log truck in Washington state for a few months. I remember thinking these guys are a little crazy to be doing that stuff way up in the air like that..yes..it appealed to me right away. But alas it was not a calling at the time. We moved to Prescott Arizona to be close to my wife’s parents. I worked for the city an a paving crew and a trash collection crew on a temp. basis. When the work dried up we came to San Diego in late 1979.

I worked a couple of years as a carpet and drapery cleaner/ installer.  In 1983 I told a friend of mine I needed a job….any job.  I started dragging brush for $40 a day plus lunch.  The work was outside and was kinda like what I saw years earlier in Washington.  I worked for this small company for 10 years, learning my craft in a very informal atmosphere; which resulted in me moving a new direction.

That brought me to work for Atlas environmental.  While there I studied for and became a Certified Tree Worker, # 960 - one of the first thousand to ever be certified.  I worked for them for about 5 ½ yrs, but a dispute over wages brought me New Way's doorstep in 1999. A small time after I started, I met Randy - we talked for about a half hour that first time. I liked the guy right away and told him New Way felt like a place I could call home.  He knew that someday I wanted to be 'running the show.'

I started to do a personal study for the Arborist Certification.  Not too long after that I tested and was designated with Arborist Certification #WE-7224- A.  It's been about 12 years now and the job is still very challenging and fun.  And do I run the show?  Not all of it, but I feel like I make a large contribution to the overall effort."
